Out on the Mersey with Birkenhead twelve quays ahead and Seacombe landing stage to the right. Henty Progress arrives at Alfred lock whilst on the way to Birkenhead west float to possibly fuel the soon to depart RFA Bayleaf Approaching Birkenhead twelve quays where Mersey Viking & Dublin Viking were alongside. Approaching Eastham locks 3 hours before high water with the entrance to the QE2 dock on the right. Calemax Enterprise using the large lock at Easham while the rams on the small lock are being repaired. The 4 MSC tugs, operated by Carmet towing are are tied up in the sluiceway. Clydnes (ex Arklow Brook) unloading coal at Manisty wharf, Ellesmere Port for onward rail movement to Fiddlers ferry power station. Catharina C unloading at Ellesmere Port. Chester road swing bridge closing behind us. Underneath the shadows of Northwich road swing bridge is the remains of Twenty steps lock where a now filled in canal connected to the river Mersey above Howley weir in Warrington. The recently repainted Cantilever bridge, Warrington. Calemax Enterprise passing Knutsford road swing bridge. The disused railway viaduct on the approach to Latchford locks. Heading away from the M6 Thelwall viaduct. Where did i put my camera..? Disused Cadishead railway viaduct just before Partington oil basin. Irlam container wharf on the left where one of the empty barges are tied up. The river Mersey can be seen flowing into the canal just before the former Cheshire Lines Committee railway viaduct crossing the canal at Irlam. Arriving at Irlam locks. Just before Barton locks are the disused pumps at Davyhulme sewage works. Barton swing bridge & aquaduct. Irwell park wharf operated by European Metals Recycling (EMR) is the only wharf at the top end of the canal which still recieves large coastal vessels albeit on a sporadic basis dependant of scrap prices. Leaving Mode Wheel locks into Salford quays where our destination is situated just out of sight to the right. Arriving at Manchester No 3 dock (formerly the drydocks) where sister vessel Gina D was being unloaded.

Passing the Weaver sluices with the river Weaver going off towards Frodsham ahead. Weston Marsh lock at the start of the Weaver navigation with the M56 & Frodsham railway viaducts in the distance. Coming up to Frodsham pumping station where the dredging's are deposited. Further up on the left is the former berth for Ince B power station, now used by Kemira. TE Ship canal shunter 3001 (built 1963) stabled at Ellesmere Port on 20/07/96. The illfated 'River Andoni' is seen detained in the background. Ship canal rail operations at Ellesmere Port finished shortly after this date. MSC brakevan seen at Ellesmere Port 15/10/87 TE A section of original MSC railway track still in situe near Randles sluices 18/06/07 Ship canal sentinel shunters 3001 & 3005 (both built 1963) stood at Ellesmere Port shortly before rail operations finished here at the docks 20/07/96 MSC Shunters 3004 along with 3001 & 3005 (all built 1963) on the right at Ellesmere Port docks 20/07/96. At this time rail operations had just about finished here at the docks and the shunters were left discarded out in the open until eventually being sold on or scrapped This was the maintenance shed for the sentinel shunters up until rail operations finished here in 1996. 27/01/08 The shed is used to store vehicles used on the docks today but has still retained the locomotive inspection pit inside 27/01/08 The line from Ellesmere Port to Eastham refinery is still connected and in relatively good condition 27/01/08 The disused line to Eastham refinery 27/01/08 Just before Eastham refinery the line splits into a loop 27/01/08 The loop line / reception sidings at Eastham refinery now becoming increasingly overgrown 27/01/08 At the same location as the previous photograph of sentinel 3004 only 12 years later. This line was re-instated to Manisty wharf in 2005 to carry imported coal by rail to Fiddlers Ferry. 02/02/08 Just beyond the points are where sentinel's 3001 & 3005 were stood on one of the previous photographs. 02/02/08 Since the line to Manisty wharf was re-instated in 2005, this line to the former Cawoods export terminal has become disconnected after the coal traffic from south Wales finished in the early 90s 02/02/08 The only line now in operation at Ellesmere Port. This continues through the dock estate to Manisty wharf where coal is loaded. The disconnected line to the right went to the former Cawoods coal terminal. Just visible on the left is whats left of the compound where the MSC Sentinel shunters were kept until the whole site was abandoned in 1996. 02/02/08 The entrance to the disused Cawoods coal container terminel at Ellesmere Port 02/02/08 Hudswell Clarke built diesel electric MSC 4001 languishing outside Winfields outdoor shop near Haslingden 09/02/08 MSC 4001 built in 1959 & originally named 'Alnwick Castle' seen outside Winfields outdoor shop at Haslingden on a short piece of track. Monitor aboard Stolt Cormorant shows us doing 7.4 knots at Ince. We round the bend near Weston Marsh where the Weaver Navigation goes off to the right and the Weston canal follows beside between Marsh lock and Weston point docks further up. Passing the Weaver Sluices which were discharching huge amounts of water after heavy rainfall but are closed on this photograph as we pass. The small ex British Waterways tug Northwich is seen in the derilict docks at Weston Point. Looking back at Weston Point dock with the derelict church still standing. Two vessels were at Runcorn docks, Wilson Humberside & Atlantic Moon The current MSC maintenance fleet based in the corner of Runcorn docks after the former site at Old Quay was abandoned in 2004. Crane barge MSC Buffalo & ex dredging barge No48 at Runcorn docks. Tug MSC Dawn & the 250 ton crane which is currently out of service. One of the tightest parts of the canal just underneath the Runcorn-Widnes bridges. Passing the narrow Old Quay swing bridge which provides access to Wigg island on the left. Passing Moore Lane swing bridge in heavy shower Approaching Acton Grange railway viaduct where the west coast mainline crosses. We pass Solvay Interox just as the sun comes out on the approach to Warrington and Chester road swing bridge. Just underneath Northwich road swing bridge is the remains of Twenty steps lock which used to connect the canal to the river Mersey above Howley weir. The cantilever high level bridge in Warrington usually provides excellent photographic opportunities for ships passing through the area. Approaching the disused Latchford railway viaduct which closed to trains in 1985 just before the approach to Latchford locks. Entering Latchford locks. Note the sluice gate are wide open to the right due to recent heavy rainfall. Looking back at Latchford locks as we depart. The small lock is currently out of use and is unlikely to ever be repaired. The busyness of the M6 motorway viaduct at Thelwall is somewhat disguised in the shot. Our journey along the canal can be traced as it shows us near the exit of the river Bollin inlet just past Rixton jct where the Mersey exits. Coming up to the next high level bridge at Warburton just as the sun breaks through. Containers placed on top of the disused Cadishead railway viaduct to deter vandals and is certainly an eyesore. Fortunately it was a glorious day for her inbound journey. Probably the most unusual visitor to the canal in the last few years was the small cruise ship 'Hebridean Princess' seen here at Latchford locks on the 13/07/05. Once in the canal, she travelled the entire 36 miles to Manchester where she berthed in the former No 9 dock at Salford Quays before taking on passengers for her forthcoming cruise. Cerestar are about to change from imported maize to domestic wheat so the number of ships visiting this quay will be heavily reduced in the future 30/01/08 Daisy Doardo passes Arklow Rover alongside at Irwell Park wharf. Could we be seeing an end to proper ships in the upper parts of the canal? Tug Daisy Doardo & barge Resv venturing into Manchester for the first time whilst undertaking a trial shipment of scrap metal from Irwell Park wharf. They are seen passing the vacant Cerestar berth whilst heading to Mode Wheel to turn & head back to the scrap berth. Georgia D, formerley the George Odey based in the Humber area and built by the Yorkshire Drydock co in Hull 1971.
